After (Lily Dale), 2014

This series of works continue an ongoing interest into the nature of belief and the potential for the recorded image or sound to be complicit in underpinning those beliefs.
These photographs were taken on a visit to Lily Dale spiritualist centre in New York state. This small community is the locus for the modern spiritualist movement and a large percentage of the town’s population are mediums. The birth of photography and spiritualism happened virtually simultaneously and the each invested the other with an aura of the uncanny and the possibility of manifesting the unknown. These images depict a deserted town in which each image is laden with narrative potential and is also paradoxically imbued with the futility of making a representation of the immaterial.
